Recreational Therapies

Enriching elder lives is our mission, and our activity program is one of the most robust in the nation. While the average nursing home might schedule a handful of daily activities, we strive to fill our residents’ days with stimulating programs that engage both mind and body. Our goal is to enhance their quality of life and help them feel younger and healthier.

See a sample monthly activities calendar below, prepared and led by Recreation Director Missy Rundio and Assistant Recreation Director, Cindy Weinraub. Visit our Facebook page to see photos of our most recent programs.

Staying Active

If you think you can’t have a workout in a wheelchair, you’ve never been to one of our exercise sessions. The foot tapping, arm waving, stretchy band workouts really get residents moving. Being physically active helps improve balance and flexibility, reducing the risk of falls. The activities staff ensures that all residents are exercising safely based on their age/ability and medical history.

Art & Music

Our residents regularly enjoy concerts, sing-alongs and therapeutic drum circles. They also can explore their creativity through art therapy sessions. Additionally, our Comfort Care residents enjoy Opening Minds Through Art, where they are paired with Occupational Therapy students from Stockton University to create art while building meaningful one-on-one relationships. Also for Comfort Care, the Music & Memory program utilizes personalized playlists to make real connections with residents. We are grateful for the generous support from Legacy Heritage Fund that has enabled us to provide intergenerational programming for our senior residents.

Gardening

Whether or not you have a “green thumb,” you’ll enjoy the informative, hands-on sessions from the the Rutgers Cooperative Extension master gardeners. Our Elder Grow programs offer therapeutic gardening for our Comfort Care residents and culinary gardening for Assisted Living residents. In addition, the Alzheimer’s Sensory Trail and Healing Garden provides an ever-changing kaleidoscope of colors and scents.

Mindfulness & Meditation

Residents practice mindfulness during mediation sessions led by Assistant Executive Director Michelle Matino.

Computers, Games & Trivia

The It’s Never 2 Late Computer™ uses touch screen technology to allow residents to listen to music, travel, Skype and enlarge their world.

Pet Therapy

The Pet Therapy program features furry and feathered friends who visit and live among the residents. The annual dog parade on the Boardwalk is a highlight for all.

Intergenerational Programming

From preschool visits to high school choirs, there are plenty of young voices at Seashore Gardens Living Center. Our Better Together program brings Jewish high school students once monthly for lunch and an interactive learning session with our residents. The award-winning Summer Sizzlers program brings teens to work/volunteer each summer. Stockton University students are frequent visitors as part of their studies.

Religious Observances

Whether you’re Jewish or Christian, we offer religious services once weekly and for holidays. We have affiliations with local clergy who visit residents regularly.

Many of these programs are grant-funded, or subsidized by generous donors. See the donation page to find out how you can support the activities program.
