Ask any resident at Seashore Gardens Living Center about Katrina Schnepp, and you’re sure to get a big smile. As Director of Social Services, Katrina is an integral part of their lives, and often considered part of their family as well. She has helped them celebrate joys and navigate sorrows. Importantly, she has brought a special connection that helps them thrive here at SGLC. That’s why it’s no surprise that she does something special for the love of her residents, and that’s running in the annual Seashore Gardens 5K Run & Health Walk on Sunday, April 16, 2023.
“I have participated the last few years, and last year I recruited my husband and kids to join me,” said Katrina. “I love my residents. Raising funds helps support them on multiple levels.”
The Run & Walk is the key fundraiser for Alzheimer’s and dementia outreach and programs.
Katrina has had a personal experience with this devastating disease. “I have a family history of Alzheimer’s and dementia on both my side and my husband’s side,” she explained. “I also have a personal connection with our residents. I have known so many of them for several years and seeing what this disease does to a person is heartbreaking.”
“It is inevitable that we all will be affected by dementia in some way or another throughout our life,” she added. “The diagnosis may be the same but the effects on an individual are very different. Raising awareness is so important not only to help fund research but to provide ongoing education to the community so we can care for this growing population of people. I think even if a person hasn’t been personally affected by this disease, they can still come out to run or walk. Exercise is good for everyone, plus you have a great view of the ocean. Enjoy it.”
